Oral Exams: What are They?
An oral exam or checkup is a common form of preventative dentistry. Dentists recommend having an exam at least twice a year. This allows your team to stay abreast of anything of any concerns and treat them immediately before they become more serious.
At Le Family, one of our dentists in Calgary will greet you upon arrival and then show you to a chair. Once you’re settled, we will begin your exam. This should take no longer than 5 to 10 minutes at most but do remember that everyone is different, and some patients require more attention than others.
First, our dentist will go through your medical background and dental history, asking about your hygiene regime at home and if you’re taking any medications. Your smile will be inspected visually for signs of decay, infection, swollen gums, irregular tissue patches, gum disease, and oral cancer. X-rays are typically done as well, as this allows us to see how well your tooth roots, jawbone, nerves, and sinuses are doing. Depending on your case, the dentist may feel along your jaw or neck, searching for abnormal lumps.
Subsequent treatment may be recommended based on the information gathered during your exam.
Teeth Cleaning: Looking Closer
Often, dental checkups are combined with a teeth cleaning. This treatment can be done in one 60 minute appointment, allowing you to resume your daily schedule in no time.
At Le Family, here is what you can expect during a routine cleaning:
- Scaling is done to get rid of plaque and tartar from the surface of and in between your teeth, and along the gum line.
- We will polish your teeth with a special gritty toothpaste, then brush them with an electric toothbrush. This removes stains and helps your teeth shine.
- Your smile will be thoroughly flossed to ensure that no lingering bacteria remains. You can spit and rinse after.
- Fluoride strengthens your teeth, w off cavities. It can be provided as a mouthwash, foam, or varnish. The fluoride will sit on your upper and bottom teeth for one minute, then you can rinse your mouth out again.
